Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Howell Mountain 2004, 89 points

2002 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Howell Mountain

(USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain)

I have to say that Duckhorn is the only Merlot I like but I am starting to feel that its over priced.

Dark ruby. Nose is rich and creamy with ripe cherries and spices and a hint of vanilla.
Medium body, with ripe fruits, nice oak with a good dose of vanilla, little earthy, black olives and spices.
Not real complex and it a nice wine but, again, overpriced at 70 dollars.

J Brookwater Merlot 2004 - 90 Points

Went to a great French resturant at the top of the Hilton, downtown Atlanta. Had a glass of this merlot and it was solid. Cant find it anyware to buy so if you know where I can get it let me know.

Very nice nose with raspberries and cream with hints of carnation like flowers. It was a little unusual in a nice way. The color was a medium purple. The start is nice with blackberries and black olives and quickly transitions to black liquorish. Not to hot at all. Kind of short transition. It got smoother in about 1/2 hour and became a very nice merlot. Medium tannins and a touch too bitter on the finish. I wish I could get a better read on this wine. It was not spectacular but it is worth a try. About a 50 dollar melot. I will update this when I can get my hands on some more. Sorry cant give you more on this one at this time. Just try it.

Oberon Merlot Napa 2005, 88 points

The nose had an old world smell to it. Good amount of oak and lots of black olive. More black olive than I have ever smelled in a red. It was pretty cool because I like uniqueness. Hints of cinnamon and green peppers. The taste was strong with fruit right away but the transition was fast and a little short. However the finish was not very bitter and left you with a nice soft taste of fruit and cinnamon. Overall ok and I would give it a try for 60 bucks.

Duckhorn Merlot 2003 - 89 points

Sour cherries, clove and blueberries on the nose. Nice deep ruby color. Very little heat and the start is soft and smooth. Lots of fruit and plum in the start with a hint of French oak. a nice transition through the mid palate and finish with just a little bitter on the finish. Stays long on the palate. Overall a very nice and velvety merlot and good for the price.
